Harrison Rose finished

I started Harrison Rose in June 2015 using a lovely reproduction pattern by Dawn Collector with a Needle. With relatively little piecing on the top, and a thin batting (Quilters Dream Request cotton) the hand quilting has been a breeze.

It measures 69 inches square as I only made nine blocks (instead of sixteen) - a great size for hanging or lap.

Then I machine washed it (with colour catchers just in case), and blocked it on the floor to dry. No colour runs - the catchers were clean - phew!

It dried very quickly after a good spin, and has a nice soft and crinkly feel - just how I like it - am so pleased.

So where will we live?
Could be here...

Or here...
Settled on here...

.

With that finished it was time to get another quilt prepped for hand quilting. I decided on Wheat and Woods and I'm using the same cotton batting again.

Meanwhile I have decided to finish my SVBAQ BOM - at just nine blocks. Somehow it's not thrilling me any more - possibly because of my colour choices. Click on the link to see lots of beautiful versions in progress - like Wendy's with a gorgeous cheddar background.

We finally had a day without wind so I whipped the blocks outside for a photo together - the flowers do a little to cheer up the winter garden.

I'm thinking they might look better together with some pieced sashing ...but am not sure? I'll let them sit for a while hoping inspiration strikes.

The Chapman Coverlet is an 1829 coverlet in the collection of the V&A museum in London. It has been on my "to do" list for a very long time. Finding plastic templates available from Susan Smith decided me - time to take it on! I've still not put away all the fabrics pulled for my Benjamin Biggs quilt top (waiting in the quilting queue) so am using the same reds and greens, and adding black, cheddar and yellows. The centre will be constructed around a red floral piece that has been in the stash a few years waiting for "the right moment".

I found that needleturn applique on the little 2 inch squares somehow aggravated the arthritis pain in my hands - the tight gripping of such small pieces perhaps. So I cut some card templates for the applique pieces and adapted the foil and iron method.
It works beautifully! more time spent on prep but the applique is quick and requires less precision than needleturn, so is easier on the hands.

I found the perfect box to store my squares - can you believe it?! A couple of years ago I got the gift of a china mug from the V&A museum - in a presentation box. The box was too lovely to throw away...

If anyone's read this far -  well done! I've been a bad blogger and that's a two month round up. Must try to blog better...

  9. All your projects are wonderful! Your hand-quilting pictures make me feel peaceful. I love the sunflower block. I haven't been lured to the Chapman Coverlet...until now! I didn't realise the blocks were so tiny, and that somehow excites me, so I've just ordered the templates. This will probably be a new project for me when my Quilty365 is complete. Thanks for all the inspiration.

  10. Oh my goodness! I don't know where to begin! Your Harrison Rose is outstanding and I love it on the wall. I think it looks perfect there. You are such an amazing sewer and your handwork is just exquisite!! I really appreciate the pictures you've shared especially as they are close ups and I can really see the perfection and precision of each stitch. All of your work is just so beautiful.
P.S. I've not heard of the the foil method of appliqué but I'm on my way to check it out. If it helps with arthritic hands it will be wonderful!! Again, there aren't enough words for your beautiful handwork!! Very well done!!!

Once again I am blown away with your skills and expertise....but most of all for your productivity! I am retired and spend several hours sewing every day and cannot begin to compare what I get accomplished with your projects. Soooooo inspiring! Thank you, thank you for taking the time to blog!

  17. Beautiful hand work. I agree it is the colors on the SV quilt and possibility the different background fabrics. The flowers do not pop. But of course the applique work is beautiful. It can be so discouraging when we spend all the hours doing the hand work only to realize that our "color" mood was not "spot on" when we started the quilt - or maybe our "mood" was different. Very interesting! Love the new Coverlet those colors do pop! Nanette doitrightquilter.wordpress.com

  18. Everything is just as stunning as ever. I've just used the foil method for a project and really like how it works out.
Congratulations on the chapman finish and it looks perfect wherever it ends up living.

  19. Your work continues to inspire me. Your amazing workmanship and sense of color and fabric choices are wonderful. Your hand quilting patterns for the Harrison Rose fit the style and time period of that quilt perfectly. I can't imagine doing triple rows of quilting. Woods and Wheat is going to fun to quilt. I like that you are able to adapt a pattern or use a technique that works for you. The botanical quilt with fewer blocks will be just as lovely and it's better to stop and finish rather than never finish at all. The fabric for the center of the Chapman Coverlet is made for that pattern. Wow!

  26. I think we can let you off blogging, you've obviously been busy working on some seriously beautiful quilting and sewing. Harrison Rose has turned out beautifully, and I love the pic of Wheat and Woods read you for quilting. You use a lot of pins! I wish my mind could settle on its next project, I'm feeling a bit lost without some applique.

  28. Your Harrison Rose quilt turned out lovely and looks so nice hanging! Wheat and Woods is looking wonderful, love that one, so unusual! Your SVBAQ blocks look very nice together, especially like the ones with some red. I love the way you changed the method to make the Chapman blocks work for you. I really like that quilt. Think I will check my books for a good photo of it and make some blocks for fun. So many quilts and so little time. Thanks for the lovely and inspiring post!

  34. Your hand quilting on the Harrison Rose quilt is so lovely. I enjoyed the picture of an almost eye level look at the next quilt top with all the pins. I wondered if you basted your quilts after pinning and before quilting but it looks like you just take the pins out as you go. I do love that batting that you are using because it doesn't shift very easily and the needle just glides through. You've made some very pretty flower blocks. I never think to use pink and yellow together but when I see them made up, I always like them. Thanks for sharing.

  35. So grand to catch up with your blog! Harrison Rose is over the top - classically elegant. Love your triple lines quilting!!! So much going on with you - and everything so beautiful.

  36. Wow Hilda this quilt is unbelievably gorgeous! I'm so glad that you liked the Quilter's Dream Request - it's a favorite of mine too. Freshly washed and crinkly wonderfulness!! Your triple parallel line quilting is marvellous. I haven't had the patience to try that yet - only double line - I'm wondering did you mark all 3 lines or eyeball it for lines 2 & 3? I like your botanical blocks - I like the fabrics that you used - they will make a very pretty wallhanging as well. Well I see you're making great progress on Wheat and Woods already you are such a fast hand quilter! Love the gorgeous red and greens for your coverlet project - very glad you could find a method that is comfortable for you.

  44. It may have been a while, but some posts are worth the wait! Your Harrison Rose is stunning. I am so happy to see that you chose to hang it in all its glory. I look forward to watching your progress on the Wheat and Woods quilting. I think that is one of favorites. Well, except for all your others! I have always loved the Chapman Coverlet and your color choices are delicious! I love that center! I really am going to try the foil method. I'm happy that it works so well for you. As for the SVBAQ quilt, I had thought of stopping too, but with your kind words for my color choices you have spurred me on and I thank you. I'm not sure how I have kept up, but I think it is the color that keeps me going. Your 9 blocks will become something magnificent I'm sure. Thank you for sharing such treasures.

  45. Lovely, lovely, lovely- as always. I love Harrison Rose so much, that I bought the pattern and fabric. It is waiting it's place in line. Hahaha...

I just found out that what I assumed was arthritis, is actually going to cost me two surgeries. Not kidding! One on the left, and one on the right. I am not a happy camper.

  47. I trust the first photo of your Harrison Rose quilt is a work in progress. There is a red triangle that is not quilted. I only ask because the triangles on either side of it are quilted. Lovely work and wonderful inspiration.

  48. I just love visiting your blog - always something beautiful to see. This time it's the Chapman coverlet that caught my eye. Again and as always you have chosen perfect fabric. Can you tell me how many different fabrics you are using for this quilt? I never quite know how many are best and I am learning as much as I can. I will be buying the Chapman pattern and thanks to the internet I can also get it from over here in Germany. Thanks for sharing!
