Have just finished the applique of all the stars on my inner Burnt Quilt border...hence am seeing stars!
They were English paper pieced first, pressed, papers removed, and appliqued down. I should have done the applique
before adding the other borders - made it awkward to manage with armfuls of fabric to turn, but we live and learn! A few of the stars up close...
They are great fun to make and I enjoyed making dozens of them in the Folk Art Basket quilt (Karen Cunningham class ) shown in an earlier post. Here are some of the stars on it
Thanks to some lovely, encouraging comments on my Baltimore post (no pressure though LOL) I have started another block and this is progress so far on a basket

A bit messy but you can see how it gradually comes together with back basting, and marking only on the back of the fabric. I spend quite a while
dithering about deciding on which green to use - so have used a few different ones in these blocks , and am now trying to ensure there is a balance of the different greens across all the blocks, so they will look OK together. I don't seem to have the same trouble deciding on reds... maybe there are just less red choices?
All lovely. Great fussy cutting and stitching.
ReplyDeleteLove your use of fabric for the stars. Fun to see a close up of the basket quilt. Wonderful quilt! Thanks for showing your applique block in progress. I think you are right about the reds.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your new basket and all of those stars! I have just the opposite problem: lots of reds and not as many greens. Maybe we should get together and do some swapping :).
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
the fussy cutting of those stars makes them really special~!

The 'burnt quilt' is coming along nicely! I would never tackle such a complex handwork piece but I did study the tutorial you refered to and found it very helpful. I think I will try it. I think the 6 pointed stars look great appliqued, maybe better than the pieced version, more 3 diamentional. cheers, CW
ReplyDeletelove your stars and your quilt. Just found your blog - lovely!
ReplyDeleteIt is really amazing! Every extra effort you put into this quilt is worth it!
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful fussy cutting. It's interesting to hear about the back basting technique.
ReplyDeleteYour Burnt Quilt is spectacular! I just love the colours (and the pattern isn't bad either!). You'll be done in no time by the looks of it.

ReplyDeleteI just found your blog today! Your work is really fantastic-I'm a huge hand applique fan. Do you use Inklingo for your English paper piecing technique? I love the Dutch chintz fabrics you're using; where can I find them online? Thank you for sharing a bit of your world. :)
ReplyDeleteI love all your stars and color combinations! I just finished nine string stars that I have started to applique to the background. The stitching is very enjoyable, and it makes something hard so much easier.
